What is the FFH x world cup collection?
This art piece contains 54 Women’s World Cup symbols from around the world. From the gold chain which was based upon the logo/symbol of the first WWC held in China in 1991 to the “Il Campeonato Mundial” poster which is where an unofficial WWC was held in Mexico in 1971 to Christne Sinclair's Autobiography and “Bend it like Beckham!”
Each of the 32 countries in the 2023 WWC is represented by an individual symbol (or two) in the piece! Some special symbols: Miraildes Maciel Mota aka “Formiga” from Brazil as a bobble head in her Brazil uniform - The Four Four Two Magazine with the 9 teams who made the WWC for the first time - Eudy Simelane (In the picture frame). Eudy was a footballer for the South African National team “Banyana Banyana” and one of the first openly gay women in South Africa. An activist for LGBTQ+ rights and social change in South Africa; she was well known for her football prowess, intelligence and humor.
In 2008, Simelane was brutally raped and murdered at only 31 years old. A victim of “corrective rape” in South Africa. Eudy’s incredible activism and story captivated the nation and brought the issue of 'corrective rape' to attention. I wanted to highlight her because she is one of my heroes and the whole world of football should know about and honor her.
